Irena Popović graduated at the Department of Composition and Orchestration, Faculty of Music in Belgrade, the class of Srđan Hofman. In 2003 she started graduated studies with Zoran Erić at the same faculty, enrolling at the same time into graduate studies at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, the class of Reinhardt Vebel.

Compositions of Irena Popović have been performed at festivals, concerts, competitions in Romania, Hungary, Australia, Belgium, Germany and Austria. Her compositions received awards at festivals and competitions, e.g. Little Noiz was awarded the Second Prize in the students’ category at the International Review of Composers in Belgrade. She also wrote music for various performances and exhibitions in Serbia, as well as incidental music for Serbian National Theater in Novi Sad, National Theater in Belgrade, Duško Radović Theater for the Young and Subotica Theater. She collaborated with Goran Bregović in the orchestration of his ballet Queen Margot.

She is the founder of the group The Music Material Industry which assembles performers and composers working indifferent environments and which insists in bringing together different types of artistic expression, with a tendency to grow into a mobile “musico- poetic theater”. Within the group, there is a special branch Vocal Cultural and Artistic Society of Expansive Women Oh, meine liebe Constanze, which promotes the creative work of women.

As a singer and pianist she appeared at festivals of jazz and improvised music (Kanjiža, Kluj, Budapest…), and she is an active improviser within specific workshops in which she works with informal theater groups.
