A Word from the Selector

Ladies and gentlemen,

We are about to embark on the 17th International Review of Composers, bearing the title of New Miniatures.
The concept of miniatures is important for several reasons.
First, it offered the possibility of selecting a wide spectrum of various compositions, arriving from all over the world. Out of the received 200 scores, the official part of the program (November 19-23) will feature 100 compositions from North and South America, Asia, Australia, Europe, and from domestic sources. If we have a look at the performing forces, we shall easily notice an unprecedented number of instrumentalists. More than seventy of our finest soloists will march through this Review in five days, and when to this we add those who will take part in the symphonic concert, the total number by far exceeds a hundred.
Miniatures are important also as a specific, unique opportunity to examine at one place the influence of a phenomenon we have witnessed over the last several decades within the classical musical genre. I am referring to an ever increasing degree of the reduction and acceleration of all elements of everyday life, with the aim of making it more efficient.
Is that really possible in contemporary art music? How is this general state of affairs reflected in music?
Does this bring about a change in the composer’s creative act, and accordingly the listener’s attention? These are but a few of the questions to which this year’s miniatures might provide the answers. They will, for instance, introduce us for the first time to an Oratorio lasting only two minutes, or a two- minute’ Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra, or a symphonic concert featuring ten different pieces! I hope that in this entirely new concert environment – the Hall of the National Bank of Serbia, a venue as contemporary as the Review of Composers itself – New Miniatures will offer us a great deal of what we haven’t been able even to conceive of, a great deal of what could properly carry the label the first time.
With a wish that the seven concerts of the official part and the two bonus concerts (November 24 and 25) enjoy attendance much larger than in previous years, and that the music created here in Serbia may find its way to the world as the music from the world came to us on this Review, I am sending my message to this year’s miniatures: Good luck!

Ivan Brkljačić
