Word of the selector

Dear friends

The open call for the 33rd International Review of Composers attract-ed more than two hundred scores from all over the world, out of which 32 pieces were included in the programme. They will be per-formed across eight concerts, during six festival days.

This year’s Review begins again with the concert of the RTS Sympho-ny Orchestra under the baton of the conductor Olivera Sekulić-Barac. They will perform the works by Serbian composers and remind us of the exceptional achievements of Serbian symphonic music.

As usual, the largest part of the programme is dedicated to the pieces for solo instruments and most diverse smaller chamber ensembles, with or without electronics, which necessitate a particular engage-ment and affinity of the performer towards the interpretation of con-temporary music. Such commitment makes everyday changes to the music possible, shaping it and introducing novelties which reflect the moment of its coming to life.

With the aim to encourage writing music and widening the reper-toire for accordion, the programme focuses on pieces for this instru-ment in various combinations: as a solo instrument, accompanied by a string orchestra, or as a part of an ensemble.

Within the programme of celebrating 80th birth anniversary of the distinguished composer and professor emeritus Srđan Hofman (1944–2021), one concert of the 33rd International Review of Com-posers will represent a tribute to him, featuring new pieces – dedica-tions of his former students. The members of the Ensemble for new music Construction Site will premiere the chamber pieces by ten composers: Milica Paranosić, Svetlana Savić, Ivan Brkljačić, Jasna Veličković, Laura Mjeda Čuperjani, Irena Popović Dragović, Vladimir Korać, Aleksandar Perunović, Nina Perović and Nataša Bogojević.

The programme is completed with the concert of piano music by Vladan Radovanović, performed by Nataša Penezić and a group of pi-anists.

The festival features our most distinguished ensembles and soloists who excel in performances of contemporary music: the Belgrade Chamber Orchestra Ljubica Marić and conductor Rade Pejčić, Ensem-ble for New Music Construction Site, accordionist Nikola Peković, and many other renowned musicians.

The traditional segment Review within the Review is dedicated to the winner of the “Mokranjac” Award for 2023, presented by the musi-cologist Ksenija Stevanović.

The pieces with a particular music content are selected for the festi-val, the ones which put to the fore reaching for an innovative sound quality both within acoustic ensembles and in combination of acous-tic instruments with electronics, which enrich the music language of today with their valuable results, and which point towards the future.
