Stevan Mokranjac Award

Nagrada Stevan Mokranjac (Stevan Mokranjac Award), as it is officially called, or, as has become customary in everyday parlance, the Mokranjac Award, is today a unique award for music in the domain of compositional creativity. Established 20 years ago under the auspices of the then newly founded international Review of Compositional Creativity, over the past two decades it has enjoyed a special status as the highest professional award in this area. Namely, laureates are selected by a jury appointed by the presiding board of the Composers’ Association of Serbia, regardless of who is sponsoring the award that year, which makes it a direct expression of expertise, which for every professional commands special value. So far, the juries have included composers Dejan Despić, Vladan Radovanović, Rajko Maksimović, Srđan Hofman, Milan Mihajlović, Vlastimir Trajković, Ivana Stefanović, Zoran Erić, Miroslav Miša Savić, Žarko Mirković, Miloš Zatkalik, Tatjana Milošević, Aleksandra Vrebalov, and Milorad Marinković, as well as musicologists Ivana Trišić, Ana Kotevska, Sonja Marinković, and Zorica Premate. The Award has been presented 17 times so far, with no restrictions regarding genre, in adherence to the propositions of the Award. The winning works have included complex stage pieces (three operas: Narcis i Eho /Narcissus and Echo/, Zora D., and Mileva), vocal-instrumental works (Stanice /The Stations/, Asketska beseda /Ascetic Discourse/, Sideral), as well as symphonic works (Memento, Kada se SEDAM puta podigne zavesa /When the Curtain Rises SEVEN Times), concertante works (Oberon, Koncert za klavir /Piano Concerto/, Šest scena – komentara /Six Scenes – Commentaries/, Divertimento, Diptih /Diptych/, Neobične scene sa Homerovog groba u Smirni – novi prilozi za Hansa Kristijana Andersena / Extraordinary Scenes from Homer’s Grave in Smyrna: New Additions for Hans Christian Andersen/), and chamber works (Torzo /Torso/, Sedam pogleda u nebo / Seven Glances at the Sky/, Gledajući u Ogledala Aniša Kapura /Looking at the Mirrors of Anish Kapoor/). Laureates have included composers of various generations and stylistic orientations. Also, in line with the propositions, there have been multiple laureates, since there are no restrictions in that regard either. Only four times was the prize not awarded (in 1995, 1998, 2000, and 2006). Although the 23rd Review of Compositional Creativity will not feature performances of every work rewarded so far, we shall list them here:
